New Android versus refurbished iPhone: compare support and warranty with battery condition, repair history and AI compatibility

A refurbished iPhone can look like the obvious upgrade: a once-expensive phone for roughly the price of a new Android. But the useful question is what you get for the money today, including the battery, warranty and years you expect to keep it.

Our recommendation: if you are comfortable with either operating system and the total prices are close, start with a new Android that meets your needs and has a clear support policy. Choose a refurbished iPhone when you specifically want iOS and the exact unit passes condition checks, with written seller protection and a price that makes sense after likely costs.

This is an India-focused, source-based buying guide checked on October 8, 2026. We inspected listings and official support information; we have not tested these phones for camera quality, battery endurance or gaming performance.

A real example: the refurbished discount was only ₹800

We compared two displayed 128 GB configurations. These are dated listing observations, not guaranteed checkout quotes or a claim that these are the cheapest sellers.

OptionConfiguration observedDisplayed price
New Samsung Galaxy A37 5G8 GB RAM / 128 GB, Awesome Graygreen₹46,999 in the buying tool
Cashify refurbished iPhone 15128 GB, Green, Good condition, Cashify warranty₹46,199 on the listing

Sources: Samsung India’s buying page and Cashify’s selected iPhone 15 listing. Cashify listed six months of default warranty and a further six-month extension for ₹1,899. That is seller coverage; do not assume it is Apple coverage.

Samsung’s page also showed a ₹42,999 starting-price promotion and a ₹11,999 exchange headline alongside the ₹46,999 selected-device total. We have not applied those offers or verified eligibility at checkout. Compare the final payable amounts for your payment method, postcode and exchange device.

Using the displayed device totals, the iPhone saves ₹800. Adding the optional ₹1,899 warranty extension would bring it to ₹48,098, or ₹1,099 above the Samsung’s displayed device price. That arithmetic does not make the warranties equivalent; it shows why the sticker price is only the beginning.

Which choice fits your situation?

  • You want an uncomplicated everyday replacement: favour a suitable new Android when prices are close. You have fewer questions about prior repairs and use to resolve.
  • You need iOS for a specific app or existing workflow: a well-documented refurbished iPhone can be sensible. Price that benefit honestly instead of pretending it is always the cheapest option.
  • You mainly want better photos or gaming: compare evidence for the exact models and inspect the refurbished unit. “Former flagship” and “newer phone” are not performance measurements.
  • You want built-in AI features: check the precise model and feature requirements before paying. An iPhone name alone does not establish compatibility.
  • Your current phone still does the job: compare a battery-service quote with replacing the whole device before starting either purchase.

Refurbished is a description, not one universal standard

Ask who inspected the phone, what was replaced, who provides the warranty and how a rejected return is handled. A cosmetic grade does not answer all four questions.

Apple’s own U.S. Certified Refurbished programme describes a one-year warranty and new batteries and outer shells for refurbished iOS devices. Those terms belong to that programme. They should not be carried over to a third-party Indian listing because both use the word “refurbished.” This is a comparison of programmes, not a claim that the U.S. offer is available in India.

For any seller, save the exact listing and warranty terms before paying. Ask whether battery deterioration, charging faults, display defects and previously replaced parts are covered, and whether the remedy is repair, replacement or refund. A longer warranty title is less helpful than clear coverage you can actually use.

Check the battery and repair history on the actual iPhone

Open the battery-health section in Settings and read any service messages. Ask for a current screen capture of the exact unit if you are buying remotely, then verify it when the phone arrives. A cosmetic photograph cannot tell you how long its battery lasts.

Check Settings → General → About → Parts and Service History, where available. Apple’s parts guide explains labels including Genuine, Used, Unknown and Unverified. “Used” identifies a previously used part; it is different from an unexplained Unknown status. The available information depends on model and software, and only the latest service appears if a part was serviced repeatedly.

Our buying rule is simple: an unresolved repair warning needs an explanation and a documented remedy before purchase. A battery percentage by itself is not a guarantee of the phone’s overall condition.

Do not pay for AI your chosen model cannot run

The standard iPhone 15 does not support Apple Intelligence. Apple’s current compatibility page includes the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 16 models and later, and iPhone Air. The distinction between “15” and “15 Pro” matters much more here than the refurbished grade.

If an AI feature is your reason for upgrading, write its name down and verify that feature’s device, language, region and connectivity requirements. Being able to use an ordinary AI app is a different purchasing question from having particular system-level features.

Samsung’s A37 announcement also attaches availability conditions to its AI features. Do not treat a demonstration in another market as confirmation that your preferred task works in your language.

Count support from launch, not from the day you buy

Samsung promises the A37 up to six generations of OS upgrades and six years of security updates, measured from first global launch. Buying one later does not restart those six years. The same announcement documents the commitment and its market-dependent timing.

For a refurbished iPhone, check current operating-system compatibility and the apps you need. We have not established a guaranteed future end-of-support date for the iPhone 15, so this guide does not invent one.

Write down how long you plan to keep the phone, then compare that with documented support rather than guessing from the device’s original price. Also check local repair availability: software support is less useful if a damaged screen is too expensive to replace.

Use this total-cost calculation

Purchase price + required accessories + quoted near-term repairs + optional cover you actually want = your comparison total.

Apply the same calculation to both phones. Do not add an imaginary battery bill to the iPhone and assume the Android can never need repair. Get an actual service quote when the unit’s condition gives you reason to expect work.

For example, using our observed prices, the refurbished option has only ₹800 of initial headroom. Any extra costs unique to that purchase above ₹800 erase its upfront saving. A confirmed Samsung promotion could change the comparison further.

Keep exchange value separate: you are giving up an asset, not receiving a free discount. Likewise, record the full financing cost rather than comparing monthly EMI figures with outright prices. Do not rely on a future resale value to make today’s purchase affordable.

A checklist to use before handing over money

  1. Activation: have the seller remove their account and demonstrate successful setup. Apple advises against buying an Activation Locked iPhone. A Hello screen alone is not a completed activation check.
  2. Network: verify the exact model, carrier-lock status and compatibility with the SIM or eSIM you intend to use.
  3. Hardware: check charging, touch input, buttons, microphones, speakers, cameras and biometric unlock. Test functions rather than accepting a cosmetic grade as proof.
  4. Storage: compare the same capacity and leave room for the photos, apps and video you expect to keep.
  5. Seller terms: obtain an invoice and the return window, exclusions, claim process and warranty provider in writing.

Apple provides an official pre-owned iPhone inspection checklist. Our list is a buying aid, not a guarantee against every hidden fault. If a seller will not allow meaningful checks or document the unit’s condition, keep looking.

Our decision for this example

At ₹46,999 versus ₹46,199, we would start with the new Android if either operating system works for the buyer. The ₹800 saving gives little room for additional costs, and the standard iPhone 15 cannot deliver Apple Intelligence.

We would consider the refurbished iPhone for someone who specifically values iOS, has verified the particular unit and accepts the seller’s coverage. This is a recommendation about purchase risk and fit, not a tested camera or performance victory for either phone.

Before choosing the A37 itself, compare other new models at your final budget. Our budget AI phone comparison explains other feature and support trade-offs, but its U.S. launch-price references should not be treated as Indian offers.
