Why slop keeps winning anyway
The uncomfortable math: a slop operation can publish a thousand articles or a hundred videos for less than a single human journalist's day rate. Even a 0.1% hit rate on algorithmic distribution pays for the whole batch. Enforcement removes individual offenders; it doesn't change the incentive. Here's the finding that should reframe the whole debate: Graphite also checked what actually ranks, and found that 86% of articles surfacing in Google Search were human-written, versus just 14% AI. Slop is being produced at parity with human content but consumed at a fraction of it. Search engines, recommendation systems, and — crucially — readers are already filtering harder than the production numbers suggest.
There's a self-correcting mechanism in play, too. AI labs need human-created data; a web drowning in synthetic text risks "model collapse," where systems train on their own exhaust. That gives the biggest players in AI a direct commercial interest in keeping human content findable and human creators paid. It's a strange alliance, but it's real.
The problem with AI slop was never that a machine wrote it — it's that no human cared enough to check it. Volume without accountability is what degrades the web, and accountability is exactly what platforms, search engines, and readers are now pricing back in.
